Five Teenagers Die in Wrong-Way M9 Crash in Kildare

Must read

Five teenagers have died after a devastating M9 crash in County Kildare. Four other people also suffered serious injuries in the collision.

The crash happened around 3am on Sunday near Junction 3 of the M9. According to Gardaí, a vehicle travelled against traffic on the motorway. It travelled southbound along the northbound carriageway between Junctions 3 and 4. Moments later, the vehicle collided head-on with another car.

Five teenage boys occupied one of the vehicles involved in the collision. Sadly, Gardaí later confirmed that all five had died. Their bodies were taken to Naas General Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Family liaison officers are supporting the relatives of those involved.

Meanwhile, four people in the second vehicle suffered serious injuries. They included three women and a male child. Two of the women are in their 30s. The third woman is in her 20s. All four injured people remain in hospital receiving treatment. One of those seriously injured is a child.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly described the M9 crash as horrific. He also expressed sympathy for everyone affected by the tragedy. Kelly warned about the dangers of driving against traffic on motorways. He said some people reportedly engage in such behaviour for social media attention.

Such actions can create an immediate and potentially fatal danger for other motorists. Innocent families can face devastating consequences within seconds. The latest tragedy follows another wrong-way motorway collision in Dublin. Nine people suffered injuries during a head-on crash on the M50 last weekend.

That incident has renewed concerns about dangerous motorway driving. Authorities have again highlighted the serious risks associated with reckless behaviour. Forensic collision investigators have completed their examination of the M9 scene. Investigators will now work to establish the full circumstances behind the collision.

Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, has also opened an independent investigation. Its investigators attended the scene following the fatal incident. Fiosrú stressed that the referral does not automatically indicate Garda wrongdoing. Instead, investigators will examine whether police actions contributed to the deaths or injuries.

The organisation cannot provide further details while its investigation continues. Its team will assess the circumstances under its statutory responsibilities. At the same time, Gardaí have appealed to members of the public for information. Officers particularly want to hear from motorists who travelled along the M9.

Investigators are seeking dashcam footage recorded between 2am and 3am on Sunday. Drivers travelling in either direction can provide relevant recordings to Gardaí. The motorway section between Junction 3 and Junction 4 remained closed during the investigation. Authorities expected the road to reopen after investigators completed their work.

Emergency crews faced an extremely difficult response following the collision. The incident also placed significant demands on investigators and medical teams. For the families involved, the M9 crash has brought an immense personal tragedy. The loss of five teenagers has also shocked communities across the region.

Authorities continue examining how the vehicle entered the wrong carriageway. Officials have not yet released further details about that part of the incident. Gardaí are urging anyone with information to come forward. Dashcam recordings could prove particularly useful to the investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing as relatives begin dealing with the devastating consequences. Officials continue urging motorists to exercise extreme caution on motorways. The M9 crash has become one of Ireland’s most serious recent road tragedies. Investigators will now work to establish exactly what happened before the fatal collision.
