New Left-Wing Party Emerges as Corbyn and Sultana Depart Labour

Must read

Jeremy Corbyn has confirmed that discussions are underway to establish a new left-wing partyfollowing ex-Labour MP Zarah Sultana’s resignation. The former Labour leader praised Sultana’s “principled decision” and expressed excitement about building a “real alternative” to mainstream politics.

While details remain unclear, Corbyn hinted that the new left-wing party would soon take shape. Talks have been ongoing among independent pro-Gaza MPs aligned with Corbyn, with plans to contest next year’s local elections.

Sources reveal that key decisions including leadership and the official launch remain unresolved. Some supporters want a democratic process to determine the party’s direction. Corbyn’s statement avoided confirming his own role but emphasized creating a movement offering “hope” outside the “broken political system.”

Sultana, suspended from Labour last year over her opposition to the two-child benefit cap, criticized the government’s Gaza stance and welfare policies. Her departure signals growing discontent among Labour’s left wing, though no other MPs have yet joined her.

Labour’s Ian Lavery sympathized with Sultana, suggesting the party had “left her” by drifting from its roots. However, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper defended Labour’s record, citing NHS improvements and expanded free school meals as evidence of meaningful change.

Meanwhile, former Corbyn adviser Andrew Murray claimed the new left-wing party could attract 100,000 members and 10% in polls. Potential names like The Collective or Arise are under discussion, with a likely launch within months.

The Greens’ co-leader, Adrian Ramsay, urged progressives to support his party instead. Yet, Corbyn’s alliance with independent MPs—many united on Gaza could draw voters disillusioned with Labour’s direction.

With Labour facing internal rebellions, including 49 MPs opposing its welfare bill, the new left-wing party may further fracture the left’s vote. As Corbyn’s project gains momentum, its success hinges on uniting activists and presenting a clear alternative to Starmer’s government.
