The UK has finalized a post-Brexit agreement with the EU regarding Gibraltar’s border status. UK and EU strike landmark Gibraltar deal, ending years of negotiations since Brexit in 2020. The deal aims to prevent strict checks at the Gibraltar-Spain border.
Under the new deal, travelers at Gibraltar Airport will undergo joint passport checks. Spanish officials can deny entry, as arrivals may proceed into the EU’s free-travel zone. This mirrors the Eurostar system at London’s St Pancras station.
Additionally, the deal ensures no sovereignty changes for Gibraltar. The UK retains full military control, including the RAF base and airport.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy called the deal a “breakthrough.” He emphasized it protects Gibraltar’s economy and British sovereignty. Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo praised the agreement, calling it vital for future generations.
Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez and UK PM Keir Starmer agreed the deal strengthens bilateral ties. Starmer thanked Picardo for his leadership in securing the agreement.
Gibraltar, a British territory since 1713, remains a diplomatic flashpoint. Spain has long claimed sovereignty, but Gibraltar’s residents overwhelmingly reject shared control. A 2002 referendum saw 99% vote against Spanish co-rule.
Around 15,000 people cross the Gibraltar-Spain border daily. The deal prevents disruptions from the EU’s upcoming Entry/Exit System, which could have caused delays.
Reform UK’s Richard Tice accused the government of “surrender,” while Conservatives vowed to scrutinize the treaty’s legal text. Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel stressed any deal must protect Gibraltar’s sovereignty.
EU officials, including trade chief Maroš Šefčovič, hailed the agreement as historic. All parties now aim to finalize the treaty swiftly.
UK and EU strike landmark Gibraltar deal, marking a major step in post-Brexit relations. While challenges remain, the agreement eases border friction and maintains Gibraltar’s British status.
