Ex-Minister Who Bet on Election Date in Line for Peerage

Must read

Former Scottish Secretary Sir Alister Jack, who admitted placing three bets on the timing of the 2024 general election, is set to receive a peerage in Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours list.

Jack, who served under three Conservative prime ministers, was the most senior figure embroiled in last year’s election betting scandal. He revealed he won £2,100 by correctly predicting a July vote after two earlier losing wagers. Despite the controversy, he maintains he broke no rules and faces no Gambling Commission investigation.

The Cabinet Office declined to comment on honours speculation, but sources suggest Jack’s elevation to the Lords is imminent. The move comes as the government seeks to reform the upper chamber, including removing hereditary peers.

The betting scandal saw multiple candidates and a Met Police officer investigated, though no charges were brought. The Gambling Commission’s probe into potential misuse of insider information continues.
