Team Wales Triumphs At WorldSkills UK

This week marked a historic moment as Team Wales Triumphs at the WorldSkills UK National Finals in Wales. The event brought together over 400 apprentices and learners from across the United Kingdom to compete in skill-based competitions. Consequently, Wales fielded its largest ever team, showing the impact of investment in training and facilities.

From 26th to 28th November, competitions took place across five venues in south Wales, covering more than 40 skill areas. These included engineering, construction, digital technology, hospitality, and the creative industries. Moreover, the Team Wales Torch Relay highlighted competitors’ dedication as it traveled across the nation.

During the medal ceremony at ICC Wales on 28 November, Team Wales Triumphs once again with 57 medals in total. The team earned eight Gold, nine Silver, thirteen Bronze, and twelve Highly Commended awards. In addition, Team Wales collected 15 extra medals in Foundation Skills competitions, showing broad expertise across all areas.

Meanwhile, in Milton Keynes, nine Welsh heat-winners competed in the SkillBuild National Finals, winning a Silver and a Bronze medal in Wall and Floor Tiling. SkillBuild, delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board, is the UK’s largest multi-trade competition for construction trainees. This success demonstrates the versatility and skill of Welsh competitors.

Overall, Wales was represented by 122 competitors, making up about 30 percent of all UK entrants. This record participation reflects strong national support for vocational training. Robert Jones, Gold medallist in Aircraft Maintenance, said the competition helped him evaluate and improve his skills. Similarly, Anisa Abdin, highly commended in Beauty Therapy, said the experience boosted her confidence and inspired her future ambitions.

Minister for Skills Jack Sargeant praised Team Wales Triumphs, highlighting the dedication and quality of Welsh vocational talent. Likewise, WorldSkills UK Chief Executive Ben Blackledge emphasized that these young competitors represent the future of the economy.

Furthermore, the competition allowed employers, industry experts, and educators to witness talent development firsthand. Medallists now have the opportunity to join Squad UK and represent Wales at future global WorldSkills events. Therefore, Team Wales Triumphs showcases both the skill and ambition of the nation’s next generation of professionals.
