A man faces a manslaughter charge after another man died following a dog attack in Wakefield.
Lee Ellis, 55, faces two charges following the incident on an old railway footpath. Police arrested him after a 55-year-old man suffered serious injuries during an altercation. West Yorkshire Police received reports of the incident around 1.30pm on Saturday. Officers travelled to the former railway line near Blacker Lane in Calder Grove.
According to police, the victim suffered a dog bite during the altercation. He later died in hospital despite receiving medical treatment. Police have charged Ellis with manslaughter. He also faces a charge of being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog. The second charge relates to an injury that resulted in death. Ellis lives on Blacker Lane in Calder Grove, Wakefield.
Police have taken a German Shepherd into their care as part of the investigation. The animal remains at police kennels while officers continue their inquiries. Meanwhile, Ellis remains in custody ahead of his court appearance. He will appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 18.
The investigation continues as officers work to establish exactly what happened before the fatal attack. The incident happened on the former West Curve railway line. The footpath runs away from busy residential areas and attracts relatively few walkers. Local residents described the route as quiet and secluded. They also said walkers often encounter only occasional dog walkers along the path.
One couple who planned to use the footpath that day described the area as particularly isolated. They said the route has few nearby homes. They also suggested that the secluded surroundings could make it difficult to find witnesses. Their comments come as police appeal for information about the circumstances surrounding the death.
A local man, Danny Green, 23, also described seeing emergency vehicles near the scene. He said the news of the fatal dog attack had shocked him. Officers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the dog’s involvement. They have not released further details about the animal or the events leading up to the attack.
Furthermore, police have not disclosed the identity of the man who died. The investigation remains active. Detectives will examine evidence from the scene and assess the circumstances surrounding the altercation. Ellis now faces serious criminal proceedings over the death. However, the charges represent allegations, and the court will determine the case.
The manslaughter charge means prosecutors will need to establish the circumstances that led to the man’s death. Meanwhile, the dangerous dog charge concerns the alleged control of the animal. The fatal incident has also raised concern among people who regularly use the footpath. Residents describe the former railway line as a peaceful route away from busy roads.
Nevertheless, police activity has brought renewed attention to the area. Investigators are expected to continue gathering evidence before the case progresses through the courts. The German Shepherd will remain under police control while the investigation continues. Authorities have not yet indicated when they might make further decisions about the animal.
For now, the focus remains on establishing what happened during the altercation and how the dog became involved. The case will move forward when Ellis appears before magistrates in Leeds. Further details could emerge during the court proceedings as investigators continue their work.
